I Blinked…and Somehow it’s Already Summer

Sometimes I wonder if we’re doing enough.

If we’re covering what we “should” for all four of our kids.

If it’s all adding up the way it’s supposed to.

And then I look back at a year like this…

and I realize just how full it really was.

🍂 Fall was big, bold, and full of movement

We started the year with an epic three-week trip through California.

The Redwoods were first—

tide-pools, hikes, the sky walk, driving through a tree, becoming Jr. Rangers.

It felt magical in a way that’s hard to put into words.

Then San Francisco—

culture, Alcatraz, maritime history, and the most incredible interactive science museum- Exploratorium at Pier 15.

We went to Hollywood and Universal Studios…

where my kids confidently told us they might become filmmakers someday.

We also visited Griffith Observatory.

We explored the LA Natural History Museum,

cheered at Medieval Times (fueling a growing obsession with knights),

and learned lessons I didn’t expect at Disney—patience, stamina, creativity.

And then Yosemite

snow, hail, sunshine, fog—everything at once.

The perfect exhale after the pace of everything before it. Quiet, grounding, and deeply inspiring.

Back home, fall stayed full—

soccer games, parks, hikes, and that steady rhythm of being outside as much as possible.

It was fast.

Full.

Alive.

❄️ Winter slowed us down—and we leaned into it

The energy shifted.

We stayed home more.

Slowed our mornings.

Spent days in pajamas, reading, watching movies, just being together.

We read constantly—chapter books at night, stories throughout the day.

We baked cupcakes and celebrated birthdays.

We fermented everything—kombucha, vegetables, sourdough, cider.

We picked fruit and made apple cider and applesauce.

The kids kept up with their responsibilities: caring for the chickens, their spaces, and their bodies.

Started fresh milled sourdough with our grain mill.

Even made sourdough pasta from scratch.

We experimented, created, and tinkered.

Art projects. Science experiments. Legos. Curiosity-led days.

We hiked into the National Forest to cut our own Christmas tree,

Explored science concepts while making Christmas candy,

and wandered in awe at the zoo lights.

It was quieter.

Softer.

But just as meaningful.

🌱 Spring brought energy back

We came back to life a little.

Rainy day hikes.

Bike rides.

Park days that turned into hours of play.

Trips to OMSI, the Oregon Coast Aquarium,

the air and space museum, and so many library visits that turned into deep dives.

We hosted playgroups, connected more, and stepped back into community.

We went to Great Wolf Lodge—chaotic, loud, and somehow still so fun.

Learning kept happening in the background—

math through games (and yes… a few worksheets),

fractions with pizza,

Duolingo Spanish and chess (a surprising favorite).

And somewhere in all of it…

they learned.

Not in neat categories.

Not in a way that fits on a checklist.

But in a way that sticks.

They learned about:

– people

– places

– the environment

– how to try something new

– how to research what they’re curious about

– how to keep going when something feels hard

They learned how to be curious.

We saw a lot.

Experienced a lot.

Connected a lot.

It was chaotic and calm.

Inspiring and messy.

Full and somehow still peaceful.

It doesn’t look like school.

It doesn’t usually feel like school.

But when I look back at a year like this…

I know it was enough.

More than enough 🤍
