What Curriculum Should I Use for Homeschooling? Finding the Right Fit for Your Family

Choosing a homeschool curriculum can feel overwhelming because there are so many options out there. The good news? There’s no one-size-fits-all approach—your perfect curriculum depends on your child’s learning style, your teaching style, and your family’s goals.

Here’s a quick guide to help you find the right fit:

1. Understand Different Curriculum Styles

Traditional/Structured: Textbooks, lesson plans, and scheduled subjects—great if you like clear guidance. Unschooling/Child-led: Letting your child’s interests guide learning, with less formal structure. Charlotte Mason: Emphasizes literature, nature study, and narration. Classical: Focuses on logic, rhetoric, and a structured three-stage learning model. Eclectic: Mix and match from various curricula based on what works best for your child.

Or, do like our family and freestyle it! We welcome every learning opportunity that comes our way — reading classic literature, studying in nature, tending our garden, visiting museums, and practicing math everywhere from the kitchen table to the grocery store. It works beautifully for our family of four kids ranging from toddler to elementary. No formal curriculum here… just a whole lot of meaningful learning happening every single day..

2. Consider Your Child’s Learning Style

Is your child hands-on, visual, auditory, or a mix? Some kids thrive with lots of projects and experiments, others prefer reading and writing. Choose resources that engage your child’s strengths.

3. Think About Your Family’s Lifestyle

Do you prefer all-in-one boxed curricula or creating your own from various resources? Do you want mostly online programs, printable workbooks, or a library of books?

4. Try Before You Buy

Many publishers offer free samples or trial periods. You can also check your local library or homeschool co-op for curriculum reviews and used materials.

5. Remember, You Can Change It Up

Your first choice doesn’t have to be permanent. Many families tweak or switch curricula as their kids grow and interests evolve.

Homeschooling gives you the freedom to tailor learning to your child, so trust your instincts and enjoy the process!
