Field Trip Week: Hands-On Homeschooling in Action

This week, we’re diving deep into immersive, hands-on learning experiences—the kind of real-world education that leaves lasting impressions.

Some of the most valuable lessons don’t come from textbooks or worksheets—they come from hands-on, lived experiences. That’s exactly why we’re heading for another homeschool field trip designed to bring history and culture to life for our kids.

We started at the Oregon Coast, searching tidepools and sandy shores for agates, shells, and glimpses of ocean habitats. It’s one thing to read about marine ecosystems—it’s another to see them come alive under your feet. We also visited the aquarium, turning our curiosity into a full-day marine biology lesson.

Next, we explored Oregon’s Old Town St. Helens—known to movie fans as Halloween Town and a filming location for Twilight and Halloweentown. We used this as a creative jumping-off point to talk about how history, local culture, and storytelling intersect.

A little nod to The Shining… in St. Helens

Today, we’re heading into an experience that will hold a special place in our homeschool journey. We’ll be visiting the Museum at Warm Springs in Oregon, where my kids will get to see authentic artifacts, listen to stories passed down through generations, and gain a deeper understanding of Native American heritage through their own eyes and hands.

This isn’t just a day trip—we’re staying in a real teepee to experience firsthand a small part of the living history we’re learning about. We’ll also be visiting the Warm Springs Reservation, where respectful learning and observation will help us understand the vibrant, ongoing culture of the community.

As always, I’ll be turning these experiences into resources for other families who want to bring place-based, experiential learning into their homeschool rhythm. Expect blog posts, printable learning guides, and plenty of family-friendly travel tips coming soon.

I can’t wait to share what we learn, how this experience impacts our homeschooling journey, and how other families can bring meaningful, immersive learning into their own rhythm too.

These are the lessons that go beyond worksheets. This is learning that sticks.
