A few days ago, after we finished weeding the garden together, I looked up from the soil just in time to see our 18-month-old picking mint leaves—tasting a few, then toddling over to share them with the chickens. Just a few feet away, our four- and six-year-olds were crouched under a broccoli plant, munching on a leaf the size of their baby sister—not even kidding.
And then came the moment that stopped me in my tracks.
Our eight-year-old looked up, dirt on his hands and sunshine in his smile, and said,
“Thanks for teaching me so much about gardening, Mom.”
My heart just about burst.
This. This is what learning looks like for us. And this is why we homeschool.
We live together.
We learn together.
And we’re truly thriving.
What Homeschooling Looks Like for Us
No two days are ever the same in our home—and that’s just how we like it.
Some days, we follow deep interests that spark curiosity: dinosaurs, outer space, how sourdough works, or what it’s like to be a spy in history. We dive into books, ask questions, draw diagrams, and fill our table (and walls!) with ideas.
Other days, we explore the world around us and come home with a fresh list of questions. Sometimes we’ll research for weeks before taking a field trip or planning a vacation—learning as we go, fueled by wonder.
Learning More Than Just Facts
Homeschooling for us isn’t just about academics. It’s about nurturing the whole child—mind, body, and heart.
We weave social-emotional learning into our rhythm, asking big questions like:
💬 Why do people feel the way they feel?
🌎 Why are things the way they are?
🔄 How can we see this from another perspective?
We embrace the “you can always try again” philosophy. In our home, mistakes are part of the process, and every challenge is a chance to grow.
Growing as a Family
Homeschooling has given us the gift of time and connection—of growing alongside our children instead of just guiding from above.
We don’t have it all figured out, and that’s okay.
Because the beauty of this path is that we’re all learning. Every single day.
And I couldn’t be more grateful.
